Slowly Phasing Out Your Lawn

If you’re not yet ready to get rid of all of your lawn but want to experiment with having less of it this year, here are some ideas on how to do so.

One way is to get rid of the lawn around each of your trees, minimally 5 feet out. Re-plant with native groundcovers or lower growing perennials, ideally that spread quickly. Don’t use annual bedding plants that need a substantial amount of water to thrive. If the tree is mature, whatever you plant will be competing with it for water. If you can’t dig plants into the ground around the base of the tree, even 2 feet out, don’t worry. Just mulch the area.

Replace a large area of your lawn on the perimeter with ornamental grasses. Most of them need little water, are easy to maintain and stunning in the landscape.
