Designing Front Yard Borders

If you’re thinking about re-designing your front beds this spring but find the thought of it a bit daunting, here are some tips.

Simple is the way to go. If you want a low maintenance garden, plant deciduous shrubs, small trees and evergreens.

Also, think in terms of symmetry around the front door. I love using boxwoods or small hollies on either side of the front door because they always look elegant and are easy to prune.

Use groupings of shrubs, rather than one or two of each cultivar. I usually group three to five of one type of shrub for a rich, cohesive look.

Finally, use contrasting colors and shapes in the landscape. Deep red bushes like Cotinus coggyria, and some yellow leaved barberry specimens offer brilliant burgundy or golden tones juxtapositioned against the greens of other specimens.
